RESOLUTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ADOPTED AT THE 26TH NATIONAL/ 14TH BIENNIAL CONGRESS OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF GHANA CATHOLIC DIOCESAN PRIESTS’ ASSOCIATIONS, HELD IN ARCHDIOCESE OF KUMASI, FROM 2ND TO 6TH JANUARY, 2017

Preamble
We, the members of the National Union of Ghana Catholic Diocesan Priests’ Associations (NUGDPA), having met for our 26th National/14th Biennal Congress at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, from Monday, 2nd    to Friday, 6th    January, 2017, on the occasion of our 40th Anniversary, and having deliberated on the theme, “NUGDPA @ 40: THE JOYS AND CHALLENGES OF THE PRIESTHOOD”,  reaffirm that:
  1.  The Triune God is our primary and ultimate source of joy;
  2.  We experience joy through our intimate relationship with Jesus Christ, our High Priest;
  3. We find joy in priestly communion and fraternity; and
  4. We find joy in the proclamation of the Word of God and in the celebration of the Divine mysteries in the Eucharist and other sacraments;
While acknowledging the joys of the ministerial Priesthood, we are not oblivious of its daunting challenges including the following:
  1. Workload
  2. solitude
  3. Prosperity message and methods of some new religious movements.
RESOLUTIONS
Having discussed the joys and challenges of the priesthood, we, the Catholic diocesan priests of Ghana, hereby resolve:
  1.  To intensify our prayer life, the study and reflection on the Word of God;
  2. To promote on-going personal capacity building for more effective ministry;
  3. To foster priestly communion and fraternity through regular meetings, visits, communication, sharing the joys and sorrows of brothers, among others;
  4. To intensify the proclamation of the good news by word and witnessing, home visitation, school apostolate, targeted adult faith formation, and the use of modern means of social communications;
  5. To create a balance in our pastoral work, spiritual life and leisure;
  6. To work assiduously to keep to our Catholic doctrines and practices  and  to help the lay faithful to overcome the lures of the prosperity message;
  7. To continually embrace the suffering that some of our challenges may entail in the spirit of the cross of Christ in whose priesthood we share;
     RECOMMENDATIONS
We recommend that:
  1. The process of selection, formation and discernment of seminarians should be a collaborative endeavour among the family, laity, priests, vocations directors and seminary formators.
  2. Diocesan and national policies and schemes should be put in place to take care of the welfare and retirement of priests;
  3. Priests should take keener interest in the activities of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement and give pastoral guidance.
CONCLUSION
We pray that with the help of God’s grace, the collaboration of our bishops, the religious and the laity, we will realize the resolutions and recommendations for the growth of the Church as the Family of God in Ghana.
